Point 1
Architectural philosophy is not universal in my opinion. In other words, there exist a multiplicity of approaches to the creation of architecture. This reality has yielded on one hand a richness of creations through history and around the world through all the culture of humanity. On the other hand, this multiplicity has also yielded a vast variety of garbage, waste and inappropriate structures over our landscapes through a combination of laziness, greed and narrow mindedness. In the face of such nefarious battalions, our best method and weapon as architects is to fight back with architecture that stands by contrast, as Example.
Point 2
Architecture exists in molecules, physical and solid, yes. Architecture also exists in time and bends the nature of time. I realized when I visited my grandparents college and looked at the wonderful chromatic terra cotta building in which they had met, that I might not exist had that particular piece of architecture not been built, for they might not have met. The reality is that the places we create are the places we gather and live our lives. Architecture is a door to the Future.
Point 3
Creation is in the mind. For a moment, provide me the freedom to ask that you Imagine there a switch within your mind that will allow you to see in a variety of alternative ways. There are certainly other ways to ‘See’ the world than the mere miracle of reflected light. Switch to a vision that allows yo u to imagine the face of the person who made each and every thing you see. You will see more faces than you can count. The screen you view, the bookshelves, the window, the desk, the chair that holds you off the ground. In fact, our built world is entirely created out of thoughts. With the help of our hands, we have created the built world from the images within our minds. It appears to be magic; we shape the world with our Minds.
Point 4
Architecture is an abstract process. The construction and strength of a building is in reverse of the abstract. I was considering the pyramids one day and how the stones were laid up neatly from the bottom toward the peak. The peak would have been a vague idea for the builders, standing somewhere high in the air. The pyramids could not have been conceived as a square on the ground that ascends to a peak. The conception of the pyramid had to float as a peaked geometric shape within the mind of the architect, before it ever touched the ground. Architecture is a Process of creating the end result within the mind, then mentally unbuilding it... to be later rebuilt by master builders in physical form.
Point 5
Partnership.
In Summary, by Example, we create the Future with our Minds through Process and Partnership. |
