Inland Seas Education CenterA transformation of a lumber yard into an educational center for the life and science of the Great Lakes. Children in buses arrive to spend half the day on the 85' schooner, "Inland Seas" on Lake Michigan. Then, half the day in curiosity, learning and research in the laboratory, aquariums and workshops of the new Inland Seas Education Center. This project began in the snowy early days of January 1999 with a resolution by the Inland Seas board of directors to search for a shore facility location and the serendipitous event of a "for sale" sign on the Northern Lumber yard in Suttons Bay, Michigan. Many individuals and foundations are giving toward this effort, in recognition that a place of this kind can open the doors for understanding of this wonder of the world; the freshwater of the Great Lakes. |
