The Craig Guest HouseIn the Leelanau County small town of Leland, we dismantled an old garage built into a hillside, then rebuilt upon the foundation to create a ‘roadhouse’. With three bedrooms, two small bathrooms, a small kitchen and living room area with woodburning stove and library, the place is cozy. I consider this a useful model for a moderate income home in the prevalent geologically sloped woodlands of Northern Michigan. As the garage is partially below grade, there is no need to heat either the garage or mechanical room in winter, and the cooler earth maintains comfortable temperatures in summer. The efficient use of space and the high surface area to volume ratio make this a model for a “less big” house which could easily further improve with ‘green’ construction materials, power generation and other sustainable goals.Credits: Architect, Lighting: David T.
